Measuring for curtains

• The failsafe way is to install a track or pole first, make sure you have carpets or flooring in place before you measure.
• To measure the width: (A) If you have a pole, measure the pole excluding the finials (decorative ends of poles). If you have a track, measure the maximum length of the track including any returns or overlaps.
• To measure the length (or drop): Choose between the following options, sill length (B), below sill (C) and full length to floor (D). Your measurement should be taken from the eye of the ring or the eye of the track, to the desired length – do not include the fabric heading (the section above the hooks) in your measurements as this will be added when the curtains are made.
• If you would like floor length curtains, we recommend adding 2cm in length for curtains to break onto the floor. If the floor is uneven, take the longer length.

Roller Blinds
• Cath kidston roller blinds are simple laminated blinds that can be placed inside or outside a window frame.
• Roller blinds have side winder mechanisms as standard.
• The fabric is laminated to the lining by a heat process.
• When the glue cools this produces a stiffer, clean, starched finish so that the roller blind holds its shape.
• This does not make the fabric shiny or plastic coated.
• Fabric blinds can be dusted with a synthetic or feather duster, or vacuumed with the upholstery brush attachment in the same way as curtains and furnishings.
• We do not recommend hanging in a bathroom as our fabric is not damp treated.
• You can choose from standard roll or a reverse roll.
• The estimated delivery is 3-4 weeks once the call centre have placed the order.

Features & Benefits
• Roller blinds work really well in a room that doesn't have too much space.
• They are an easy and more cost-effective way to update the interior of any room.
• You can choose from a straight finish or from a range of shaped finishes (the below image is one of our shaped finish options).
• The blind comes ready to fit with all the fixtures you need and has an easy open and close cord pulley system.

Measuring for roller blinds

Recess fixing
• The blind goes into a recess frame or architrave.
• Check for any discrepancies in width and length on each side.
• The drop is normally the measurement to your sill.
• The blind will be made to the exact dimensions given.

To measure...
• First ensure that the recess your blind is going into is not obstructed in any way so the blind can hang freely when fully extended.
• Make sure the recess is at least 5cm deep, otherwise it will not be able to accommodate the operating mechanism.
• Measure the total width from A to B, and deduct 1cm then measure the total length from C to D. Do this in several places to allow for any slight variation or irregularity in your windows.
• Make a note of the narrowest of these measurements, to the nearest half centimetre using a metal tape measure.

Face fixing
• The blind will be fixed directly onto the wall, ceiling or outside of the window frame.
• The blind will be made to the exact dimensions given.
• The drop is normally the measurement to your sill.

To measure...
• Decide how far you want the fabric to overlap on all sides– we recommend at least 2cm on each side.
• Measure from G to H to the drop length you want.
• Make a note of these measurements to the nearest centimetre using a metal tape measure.

Roman Blinds
• With Roman blinds, there will be a 2cm wooden baton at the top of the blind which is attached by velcro, this is known as cord and cleat fixing.
• These form soft pleats when raised and hang flat when lowered.
• The pleats are kept in place by fibreglass rods that are sewn into casings on the lining.
• A cording mechanism attached to the wooden batons on the back of the blind allow it to be raised or lowered.
• If you would like a cassette fixing, a child safety mechanism or a 'silent gliss' cassette on your Roman blind please call the made to measure team for further information.
• Fabric blinds can be dusted with a synthetic or feather duster, or vacuumed with the upholstery brush attachment in the same way as curtains and furnishings.
• We do not recommend hanging in a bathroom as our fabric is not damp treated.
• The estimated delivery is 3-4 weeks once the call centre have placed the order.

Features & Benefits
• Roman Blinds are a smart folding blind which can either fit inside or outside a window frame.
• The blind comes ready to fit with all the fixtures you need and an easy open and close cord pulley system.

If you would prefer to purchase fabric and make the curtains yourself, please follow the instructions below which detail step-by-step how to measure for curtains. Follow our curtain estimation sheet to calculate total fabric requirement to make curtains.

How to measure

STEP 1
• Decide whether you want your curtains to hang from a track or a pole.
• Install your track or pole.

STEP 2
• We would never recommend measuring until the track or pole has been fitted.
• To measure width, you need to measure the total width of the track or pole, excluding the decorative finials.
• Make sure you don't forget to allow for overlap, this is an additional measurement and is normally 2.5cm each side. This allows the hanging curtains to overlap in the middle when they are closed, ensuring privacy.
• Add 5cms to total width for overlap.

STEP 3
• When you are measuring curtains for tracks, ensure you measure from the eye of the hook to required length, plus allow 5cm for the header. Please follow our curtain estimation guidelines below to ensure that hem allowances are included.
• When it comes to measuring curtains for poles, when doing pencil pleat curtains you have to measure from the eye of the hook (the small metal ring at the bottom of each curtain ring).
• Ensure that you allow for the header requirement when measuring from the hook drop.

Measuring a pattern repeat

If you do not have a label for a particular fabric, it is very quick and simple to measure a pattern repeat.

1. Select a motif on the fabric. Measure down the drop (NOT across the width) until you see the same motif repeated.
2. Make sure you are always measuring to the SAME POINT on the motif e.g. the top of the cowboy hat, to the top point of the cowboy hat.
3. The measurement will be the same, whatever motif you select.

Fabric estimation guide

* This figure can be changed depending on how full you would like your curtains to be:
1.5 = not too full
2 = average fullness
2.5 = extra fullness
